Impact of Accessibility-First Design Systems on WCAG 2.1 Compliance and Inclusive User Experience in Enterprise Software Platforms: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation

Abstract

This quantitative cross-sectional comparative study examined the relationship between accessibility-first design-system practices and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 conformance across enterprise software interfaces. The analysis included 60 enterprise platforms, comprising 30 accessibility-first and 30 conventional platforms, with 180 applications, 1,440 interface screens, 360 workflows, 4,860 reusable components, and 32,400 interface elements. Accessibility performance was assessed through overall WCAG 2.1 compliance, Level A and Level AA conformance, violation frequency and severity, POUR dimensions, color contrast, keyboard operability, screen-reader compatibility, and assistive-technology task success. Correlation, regression, independent-samples t-tests, Mann–Whitney U tests, and ANOVA were applied at a significance level of p < .05, with effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals used to determine practical significance. Accessibility-first platforms achieved an overall WCAG compliance rate of 91.8%, compared with 74.6% for conventional platforms, while Level AA conformance reached 88.2% and 68.5%, respectively. Conventional platforms recorded 17.51 violations per 100 interface elements compared with 6.90 among accessibility-first platforms. Perceivable violations represented 40.0% of all identified failures, followed by Operable violations at 27.0%. Accessibility-first platforms also achieved higher contrast compliance (96.1% vs. 79.4%), keyboard task success (92.4% vs. 70.8%), screen-reader compatibility (90.6% vs. 69.7%), and assistive-technology task success (88.9% vs. 66.4%). Accessible component reuse was strongly negatively correlated with normalized WCAG violation frequency (r = −.71, p < .001), while accessibility-oriented design-token adoption was strongly positively associated with contrast compliance (r = .76, p < .001). The regression model predicting normalized WCAG violations explained 64.8% of the variance, whereas the contrast-compliance model explained 67.2%. Overall WCAG compliance also demonstrated a very large group effect (Cohen’s d = 2.45). The findings demonstrated that accessibility-first design systems, particularly accessible component reuse and standardized design tokens, were associated with substantially stronger technical and functional accessibility outcomes. The study highlighted the value of embedding accessibility within reusable enterprise interface infrastructure rather than relying primarily on application-level remediation.
